Lone Rangers of the sea!
Beneath the waves off the Sussex coast, among swaying seagrass meadows and hidden pockets of marine life, lives one of Britain’s most enchanting sea creatures - the seahorse. Delicate, secretive and almost mythical in appearance, these tiny fish are a reminder that the waters around Sussex hold far more magic than many people realise.

News from the Blue: April 2026
It's been a busy news month under the waves in Sussex! The biggest news is that 164km² of Sussex seabed at Beachy Head East is now protected from bottom-trawling, thanks to Sussex IFCA's Marine Conservation Zone Byelaw 2023. Add to that a podcast, a children's book, students' artwork and a report, and we've snagged ourself a news piece!

Stars of the Seabed
British seas are brimming with marine species that most of us land dwellers would struggle to recognise. The Common Starfish (Asterias rubens) is a rare exception. With its familiar five orange arms, it’s a creature of children’s books and TV shows, its image adorning everything from jewellery to bathroom tiles. But beneath that soft, familiar exterior lies one of the seabed’s most insatiable predators.
