We spy kelp! SKRP team go beneath the waves at Bognor Rocks

This month the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project team headed out on a field trip to assess the state of the seabed and were lucky enough to see some of the areas of local coastline where beds of seaweed are flourishing...and what a bouquet of colourful life!

The pinks of the dancing seaweeds, golds of the billowing kelp and the turquoise blue of the sparkling sea were an absolute feast for the eyes. This life in turn harboured a myriad of diverse wildlife such as spiny spider crabs, ballan wrasse, cuttlefish and rays – the near-threatened undulate ray and numerous stingrays! Nature's big top circus - a vibrant stage hosting a chorus of flamboyant performers, and all hidden beneath the waves.

Sadly these images of vibrant ecosystems represent only a fraction of our Sussex seabed. Vast areas are slowly recovering from the devastation of trawling, storms and other stressors. Our hope is that through our nature-led, science-based efforts we will see these areas recover to also become vibrant habitats for marine life as observed by the SKRP team.

As a project we hope to provide you with a window beneath the waves. To share with you the majesty of the underwater world just off our Sussex coast and help recreate our coastal connection so that our underwater forests are never again lost before our eyes!
