A Hundred Years of Nature’s Storyteller

Few individuals have shaped our understanding of the natural world as profoundly as Sir David Attenborough. For generations, his voice has guided us across wetlands, down rivers and through oceans bringing the wonders of our underwater worlds into our homes and hearts.

Sir David Attenborough’s lifelong dedication to storytelling has not only inspired curiosity but has awakened a deep responsibility to connect with and protect our marine habitats and life within.

Here in Sussex, Sir David’s influence resonates strongly through the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project. Once vast underwater forests, our local kelp beds have been dramatically reduced over the past fifty years. These habitats are vital - supporting marine life, storing carbon, and helping to protect our coastline. Their recovery represents hope, renewal, and a powerful example of what can be achieved through collaboration and commitment.

Sir David has been a significant supporter of this effort. His narration of the original ‘Help Our Kelp’ film helped amplify the importance of protecting and recovering this remarkable ecosystem, bringing the story of Sussex kelp to national and global audiences.

More recently, his reflections on Sussex kelp in his book ‘Ocean: Earth’s Last Wilderness’ highlighted both the fragility and resilience of these marine environments, whilst reinforcing the message that local action can reap significant rewards for our natural world.

“The coastal communities of Sussex have taken their ghost forest to heart, and they want it resurrected.”

Ocean: Earth’s Last Wilderness is available in hardback, paperback, and as an audiobook beautifully narrated by Sir David himself. To mark his 100th birthday, we’re delighted to have special, limited-time access to the kelp chapter from the audiobook. In this powerful chapter, Sir David explores the vital role kelp plays within marine ecosystems, while also sharing the story of Sussex’s lost kelp forests and the ongoing effort to recover these rich and important underwater habitats.

Sir David’s support has elevated the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project beyond a regional initiative—it has become recognised within a wider movement of seabed recovery, and through his words, he continues to remind us of the importance of our marine world.

“If we save the sea, we save our world.”

What Sir David Attenborough means to me

And finally, we will be at the Sussex Wildlife Trust event at the De La Warr Pavillion, Bexhill-on-Sea this Sunday 10th May (10am-5pm), for Attenborough Appreciation Day. The event is free, so if you’re in the neighbourhood, why not pop in and celebrate the life of Sir David with us.

(Sadly, Sir David will be engaged with centenary celebrations elsewhere, so won’t be joining us!)

May he continue to inspire, to educate, and to remind us of the beauty and fragility of our natural world—his voice as powerful and vital today as it has ever been.
